My First Custom Built.

Postby OwJo » 07 Jan 2012, 14:09

I'm in the market for a new computer & thought that I'd get more for my money with a custom built.
I'm a complete novice but after a bit of research, have come up with this rig :

My budget is (was) £900, so a little over. I'm looking for a good all-rounder with maybe occasional gaming (I'm more of a PS3 man for that ;) ).

Any advice would be most welcome.

Only thing I would question is your need for an i7 chip - a decent i5 would do a similar job for an all rounder

Unless you intend to do some serious multiple processing stuff (massive spreadsheets/ databases/ video editting) then an i5 will be more than enough

that way you get to save a little money (or upgrade something else - like an SSD Drive) :)

otherwise looks good

Hi,

Thanks for your input.

I have contemplated the i5 rather that the i7 as it would indeed save me money.
Now, one of the main things I would be using my new computer for is photo editing (with Adobe photoshop & lightroom). I'm a bit of a photography enthusiast and shoot mainly RAW files. I have googled all the info I could about i5 or i7 with regards to photo editing and the consensus does seem to be that whilst the i7 is marginally better for this purpose there is a certain amount of future proofing for future software with this CPU.

So. as I want this computer to last a good few years i thought that the i7 would be the better option. Also, I'm at present taking an online Uni course which will require me to process a lot of data.
Oh, and I'm also thinking of delaying my purchase so to have more money for a SSD :)

Cheers!

Fair enough - in most cases an i5 is sufficient to manage most tasks but yes an i7 is definately the best beast for (complex) multi tasking jobs

SSD's are coming down in price and £100 will get you a decent one now (or something similar to that but they are no longer the massive £££ monsters they used to be for a small drive)

have fun with your new system when you finally get it though :)
